Essay:    Mi Salon Spa would like to raise women’s heart health awareness. There’s a lot of talk about inequality between men and women, but one area in particular where women are leading in record numbers: heart disease. It’s the No. 1 killer of women and is more deadly than all forms of cancer. Many women are either unaware of the symptoms to pay attention to or may attribute their symptoms to other causes. For instance, that pain in your jaw, neck or back? Don’t assume it’s just from the gym or a little extra stress. They could be symptoms of a heart attack. It can hit at any age even 18! It hit very close to home last summer as one of our Mi Salon Spa family members discovered she had a heart condition requiring open heart surgery at only 18 years of age. No previous indications of a heart condition. No warning signs that would have indicated a heart condition. A happy overachieving honor roll student finishing her senior year in high school planning her last summer before college. Her name is Olivia. She has been a dancer since the age of 4. Competing since the age of 8.Worked at the salon since 14. She struck with a stomach virus, or so she thought. After a couple days of not being able to get back her usual self her mother insisted she go to the Doctor only to hear for the first time ever that she had a Whopper of a heart murmur to which her mother responded with no she doesn’t. To the Doctor’s amazement he asked again if we were sure she has never been told she had a heart murmur because he hears a very distinct heart murmur. At this time her mother replies she has never been told this, how do you get to be 18 and develop a heart murmur At this time an appointment was scheduled to have an echo-cardiogram done the following week. Within 45 minutes of the echo cardiogram a phone call was made to her mother to inform her they needed to see a cardiologist and an appointment was set up for her in a couple days. Her parents made contact with another cardiologist for a second opinion the same day and the testing began. After several invasive tests and a couple more consults it was determined that surgery was necessary but was too complicated to be done locally and she was being referred to the Cleveland Clinic. After all test results were over nighted for the Doctor to review.  A call came that the Doctor. was hopeful he could help. She was to go there to be evaluated by one of his associates and have more tests. If it looks hopeful he has an opening in September, 3 months away! So off to Cleveland she goes more tests, more Doctor’s. Same results. Heading home to wait. One hour down the road from the hospital mom’s phone rings. The Dr. does not want this to wait until September can you be back in two weeks? What where the signs and symptoms Olivia and her parents didn’t see you ask? She had some headaches. She was tired a lot. She had some shortness of breath during dance class. Does any of this sound familiar to any other overachiever? She actually was treated by a physician for both headaches and the shortness of breath. Treated for migraines and exercise induced asthma. Our goal is to bring attention to women’s heart disease. February is National Women’s Heart Health Awareness Month. Throughout the month of February to raise awareness we: Decorated the salon red altered our Dress Code to wear Red, participated in a Fashion Show to raise money for Heart Health Research by participating in a Walk to Raise Money for Hearth Health Research Life can change in an instant. We are so fortunate to come in contact with so many people, touch so many lives and share stories that can inspire people to have the courage to believe in their selves. Trust their instinct if they believe something just isn’t quite right; don’t dismiss it go to the Doctor. We also have the ability to make a difference in our community to rally together and raise money to support research for many great organizations that save lives. The beauty industry gives us the ability to make a difference and help others! Thank you Wella for opportunities like this!

The Cause for Paws 2010 event, held on September 26th, 2010 for the benefit of the Boone County Animal Shelter and the Southern Cross Boston Terrier Rescue, was a huge success.

Those who attended shared a fun filled day with family, friends and pets. Cause for Paws was supported by Mi Salon Spa & Michaels College of Hair Design. A grand total of $1,100 was raised for the shelter and rescue.

       In July 2009 Mi Salon Spa and Michael’s College of Hair Design donated their time and talents to supprt, I Have Wings – an organization that provides financial and emotional assistance to women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In November 2008 Mi Salon Spa participated with six other Cincinnati area salons and spas to support the University of Cincinnati’s Hoxworth Blood Center. Together they were able to collect more than 110 pints of blood — helping more than 330 people in the Cincinnati metro area.
